Willow Waterhole Greenway

No visit to the Greater Houston area is complete without a stop by the Willow Waterhole Greenway. Located in the southwest Houston neighborhood of Westbury, this nature preserve has more than 300-acres of protected land.

We offer flood relief, wildlife habitats in an urban setting, and educational and recreational opportunities for Houston. Our ponds, landscape, wildlife, trails and other activities, and year-round events have made us one of Houston's most valuable assets.

Among the many things to do at the greenway are a number of trails, including the Arboretum Trail that guides visitors through wetlands featuring understory plants and groves of trees that are native to Texas. We have a birding center, dog park, and canoe launch where you can fish or explore the habitat. There are two pavilions with a third on the way, a gazebo, and the Native Prairie Plant and Naturescape gardens to explore.

Our greenway includes areas for outdoor classes next to Triangle Lake. The Rafferty Memorial Oak, which is named for Jack Rafferty who was an engineer who designed many of the flood control projects found throughout the greenway, is surrounded by large granite blocks that are laid out to mimic England's Stonehenge monument. There is also an orienteering course for scouts who are seeking to get their Orienteering Merit Badge.

Visitors can find a variety of things to do throughout the greenway. You can do walking, biking, and running on the trails located throughout the park; enjoy a meal at the picnic tables, which are first come first serve; attend events like the MusicFest in April or Trunk or Treat to celebrate Halloween. We also conduct bird surveys and have conservation workdays, which Scouts and local organizations can help maintain the park with park cleanup and maintenance. These groups can also help with building new features like birdhouses and bat houses, install mile markers or kiosks, and much more.
