Can my child or love one use the funds from the trust to purchase food, clothes, or pay the mortgage?

Typically no because any expense that is not covered by a government program such as SSI or Medicaid cannot be paid with trust funds. However, any expense that is not covered by public benefits such as education, transportation, travel, hobbies, or other enhancements to the quality of the life of your child or love one can be paid with trust funds.
