How to Keep Your Attorney Fees Down with Our Office

Working with our office is an investment in protecting your rights and achieving the best possible outcome. Here are strategies to help you keep your legal costs down:

1. Be Organized and Prepared
  • Upload all relevant documents to your client portal as requested by the attorney and staff.
  • Read through client portal messages from attorney and staff thoroughly and completely to ensure you are following all instructions and information requested.
  • Complete all requested forms or questionnaires promptly and thoroughly when requested by attorney and staff.
2. Use Our Time Wisely and Communicate Efficiently
  • Prepare a list of questions before your calls or before sending client portal messages to avoid multiple communications on the same topic or topics.
  • Be clear and concise in your messages because each message is billed. Our time is billed in 6-minute increments. For example, a task or communication that takes 1-6 minutes is billed at 0.1 multiplied by the attorney or staff’s person’s time.
  • Use your client portal for non-emergency communication—it’s more efficient and trackable for you to refer to later.
4. Respond Promptly-Especially With Discovery Documents
  • Delays can lead to rush fees or additional work, especially with discovery. We understand no one enjoys discovery, but is a process that is part of litigation and the other side has the right to request it.
  • Timely responses allow our team to plan and prioritize your case more effectively and move your case forward quicker.
5. Follow Legal Advice
  • Trust our office's strategy. Going against our advice can lead to delays, extra motions, or negative outcomes—costing you more in the long run.
6. Stay Focused on the Legal Issues
  • While we understand the emotional weight of your case, avoid using excessive legal time with the attorney or staff for emotional support via phone or via the client portal because this will increase your cost. We encourage you to seek a therapist or counselor to help you process emotions.
7. Handle What You Can
  • Ask what tasks you can handle yourself (e.g., gathering documents, preparing timelines) to reduce billable time and complete at the direction of the instructions.
8. Review Billing Statements
  • Let us know if you have questions about any charges.
  • Understanding weekly entries with the summary below.
Why do we have these entries?
  • We have daily internal team meetings that are billed as a weekly entry to allow our office to review case status and deadlines to ensure nothing is missed, coordinate next steps between the attorney, paralegal, and support staff, address any new developments or documents or communication received that opposing counsel or the court only sent to attorney, plan for court appearances, filings, or client communications, and maintain clear internal communication so the entire team stays aligned, especially when I’m in court.
  • Weekly entries are billed at the paralegal rate only and not both attorney and paralegal, which is customary in most law firms to bill at both the attorney and paralegal's rate. Weekly entries at paralegal rate is $75 per week whereas at the attorney rate is $200 per week and if both billed would be $275 per week. These meetings help us move your case forward efficiently and ensure you’re receiving proactive, and organized representation.
